AS CO-ORDINATOR OF THE VIRTUOSO LITERARY WEEKENDS

For four years in the late 1990's, Krista's dream of bringing authors and young writers together for intensive workshops culminated in live-in creative writing weekends being held in country Victoria several times a year for years 6-10. Guest authors included John Marsden, Margaret Clark, Elizabeth Honey, Hazel Edwards, David Metzenthen, Ann James, Terry Denton, Paul Jennings, Maureen McCarthy, Michael Dugan, Brian Caswell, Andy Griffiths, John Nicholson and Patricia Mullens.

With 20 years experience in children's literature, Krista has a unique overview of books and writing for children. She is an entertaining, flexible, informative and professional speaker for all age groups from lower primary students to teacher and parent groups, adjusting her presentation to suit the audience, from large groups to intimate writers' workshops.

  • How to find inspiration in your own 'backyard' - writing 'FIBTION' based on your own experiences, mixed creatively with a serious dollop of imagination!
  • The writing process as it really is for the author - from inspiration to publication. How long does it really take to write a book? Does the author really draft and edit?
  • Where do authors get their ideas? Krista's own, plus other authors' inspiration!
  • Writing books boys will actually read and enjoy.

A typical talk concentrates on the craft of writing using specific examples from Krista's books, chosen to suit the particular age group of your students, with time for questions.

It consists of a creative writing competition and workshops conducted in fifty libraries by Australian children's authors in late July each year, wholly sponsored by Nestle Australia. I conducted these workshops for 11 years and congratulate Nestle on this innovative and successful programme, which has now unfortunately lost its funding.
