Krista's news & events 2009
After a totally hectic 2008 during which I travelled for more than two months to every state and territory doing talks and writing works, I've opted for a much quieter 2009 schedule.
FEBRUARY 2009
My junior novel, NO TEARS, short-listed for the West Australian Young Readers Book Award (WAYRBA) to be announced in late October. I have been booked as guest speaker at the presentation award night in Perth.
MARCH 2009
Writer-in-residence at Reservoir Views primary school for one month, UNTIL... on 15 March I broke my left arm playing tennis, so totally out of action for a whole month, with arm in thermo-plastic cast. Some people were made to watch tennis, not play it! Looking forward to returning to Reservoir Views in Term 4.
APRIL 2009
Finally, after a year of renovation, I've moved into my new library at home and plan to write lots of new stories in this wonderful workspace.
For the whole of Term 2 I'm Writer-in-residence at St Catherine's School in Toorak two days a week with year 7 classes. Our project is for each girl to write HER-STORY, her unique family history, as part of her English and Drama curriculum for this term.
Learning Beginner's Italian once a week as I'm planning a story based on my 2008 trip to Italy, as well as dreaming of re-visiting Italy in 2010.
MAY 2009
Doing regular book reviews on ABC Radio in Alice Springs on Fridays again.
JUNE 2009
Writing time set aside in my lovely new library.
JULY 2009
Off to Noosa for a well-earned break at the end of term in the warmth of Queensland.
AUGUST 2009
Actually spending Book Week in Melbourne for the first time in many, many years, so it'll be fun to visit schools here instead of interstate as I usually do.
SEPTEMBER 2009
Spending the whole of September in the United States of America, firstly to attend my neice's wedding with my husband, Doug, on Nantucket Island; secondly to visit my American publisher, Charlesbridge Publishing in Boston; thirdly to revisit New York where I lived before I was married; and fourthly to discover some parts of America that I've never been. Who knows what stories might arise from my adventures?
OCTOBER 2009
Writer-in-residence at Reservoir Views primary school three days a week for the month.
Monday 26 October: A week in Perth doing talks and writing workshops in schools and libraries. For more information and bookings please contact Joscelyn Leatt-Hayter at Westbooks by phone on 08 9261 4211 or by email at joscelyn@westbooks.com.au
Friday 30 October: I will be guest speaker this evening at the presentation of the West Australian Young Readers Book Awards. (I'm thrilled that my junior novel NO TEARS, which is set in Perth, is short-listed for this award.)
FEBRUARY 2010
My newest picture book for young readers PEEKING DUCKS with illustrations by Sally Rippin will be published in February 2010 by Windy Hollow Books.
Set on a river in China this is a cautionary tale with three little ducks discovering the hard way that their parents do in fact have important lessons to pass on to them.
APRIL/MAY 2010
Fantastic news. My lifelong dream of spending some time living in an Italian town is to become a reality early next year.
I have been awarded a full scholarship to study Italian language and culture in Tuscany, just south of Florence, for one month in April/May 2010.
I’ll be living with a local family and studying Italian at the nearby institute each day, as well as doing drawing and painting lessons, plus a cooking class once a week. Brilliant.
Of course I’ll be spending all my spare time (when I’m not eating pasta or visiting walled villages and art galleries or just admiring the wonderful landscape) writing down stories as they happen, either in reality or in my imagination.
